Malibu Votes to Ban Plastic Bags

The Malibu City Council voted unanimously Monday night to ban retailers from distributing single-use plastic shopping bags within city limits, joining dozens of other progressive cities that have recently moved to curb the proliferation of wasteful packaging. More (press release).

Plastic Bag Bill AB 2829 Defeated — Changes to Approved Alternate Look Promising

AB 2829, the CA bill endorsed by Heal the Bay and L.A. County to impose a statewide 25-cent fee on plastic shopping bags, stalled in the Legislature on Monday, April 14. A weaker competing bill, AB 2058, was approved which would implement a 15-cent bag fee only if recycling goals are not met. However, proposed changes to AB 2058 look promising.

Southland Cities Face Stiff Fines for Violations of Beach Bacteria Limits

The Los Angles Water Board put 20 cities on notice on March 4, 2008, for continual violations of federal bacteria limits along Santa Monica Bay. The action marks the first time nationally that an oversight body has threatened fines to ensure cities’ compliance with beach bacteria limits and clean water standards.
L.A. Sets Bad Precedent With Plastic Bag Law (PDF)

Marking a significant blow to the Southland environment and economy, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors today caved to industry lobby pressure and approved a half-hearted measure to curb plastic shopping bag use. Despite strong support from Supervisors Zev Yaroslavsky and Gloria Molina, a majority of the board ignored its staff recommendation to consider a stronger measure that would ban plastic bags in unincorporated areas if aggressive recycling targets were not met.

Rimmon Fay, one of the early pioneers in fighting pollution in local coastal waters, has passed away. As a part of his lifelong devotion to saving the bay, Rim helped Dorothy Green as she founded Heal the Bay. Rim's incredible efforts working for a clean ocean and his unquenchable love for the Santa Monica Bay will inspire us always. Full obituary

State to Create Marine Protected Areas in Southern California

Taking a major step forward to protect coastal marine life and habitats, the California Fish and Game Commission announced plans on December 6, 2007, to create safe havens in Southern California.
